The study explores the role and importance of aesthetic literary values in the jury discussions of the Ingeborg-Bachmann-Prize. Aesthetic value is a topic of considerable controversy in contemporary literary theory. The study approaches the question from an empirical point of view by adapting methods from the social sciences, in particular from Grounded Theory. The jury discussions (1999-2009) as dynamic oral discussions between several literary experts open up a new perspective on literary criticism. The impartial view on the material reveals that, although there is a common knowledge of which values can “successfully” be applied to texts, the question if a text is rated as good or bad strongly depends on the way judges experience the literary text when they first read it. The first part of the study presents different theoretical contexts that influenced the analytic process. The different contexts are not to be seen as an extensive outline of theoretical positions available on the topic but rather of research which proved to be inspiring during the process of working on the discussions. The second part gives an overview of aesthetic values which dominate the discussions. While the overview of values can show the scope of aesthetic values applied by the judges the more detailed analyses of several discussions (part three) demonstrate the interplay of aesthetic judgments in the discussions.

Die Arbeit setzt sich mit der Frage auseinander, welche Rolle formal-ästhetische Werte in den Jurydiskussionen des Ingeborg-Bachmann-Wettbewerbs der Jahre 1999 -2009 spielen und welche konkreten Kriterien dabei eingesetzt werden. Dem Diskussionskorpus als empirische Grundlage und der offenen Grundhaltung gegenüber dem Material kommt dabei große Aufmerksamkeit zu. Grundlage der Auseinandersetzung sind wörtliche Transkripte der Jurydiskussionen, die mithilfe der Analysemethoden der Grounded Theory analysiert werden. Sowohl durch die Mündlichkeit des Korpus als auch durch den Diskussionscharakter unterscheidet sich das Material deutlich von vielen anderen Arbeiten zum Thema. Der Dialog zwischen Theorie und Material, der im Analyseprozess praktiziert wurde, eröffnet dabei eine neue Perspektive auf literaturkritische Wertungsvorgänge. Formal-ästhetische Wertungen erweisen sich als ein in der Gruppe der Expertenleser verankertes Handlungswissen, das in seiner spezifischen Ausprägung auf die Wirkung des literarischen Textes bei der Lektüre zurückverweist. Der erste Teil der Arbeit rekonstruiert die Kontexte, die sich für die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Material als wichtig erwiesen haben. Im zweiten Teil werden die Analyseergebnisse geordnet nach einzelnen Wertmaßstäben vorgestellt. Der dritte Teil präsentiert die Analysen des Wertungsverhaltens in ausgewählten Diskussionen. Es wird Wert darauf gelegt, die Wertaussagen in ihrem argumentativen Kontext zu betrachten.
