Abstract

English

Radiologically guided clinical procedures such as ureteroscopic stone therapy can lead to significant eye lens radiation exposure of clinicians, which can result in radiation-induced cataracts. To objectify the eye lens radiation exposure and it´s reduction by a face protection shield we used eye lens dosimeters in a phantom model study and during ureteroscopic procedures; the eye lens dosimeters were changed and evaluated after every single procedure. In the phantom model study we could demonstrate that depending of the fluoroscopy time and the number of x-ray-images significant eye lens radiation exposure can occur, and that it is reduced to a minimum when a radiation protection shield is used. The measurements during ureteroscopic procedures also showed a decrease of the eye lens radiation exposure when using the shield, but without reaching statistical significance. Further studies including extended measurement periods are needed to record the actual radiation exposure of the clinicians and the effects of protective shields.
