Abstract
English
Parkinsons’s disease is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders. Currently only the symptoms can be treated, but no neuroprotective therapy is available. In order to develop necessary medication we need further information about the beginning of the disease itself, the course of the disease as well as about non-motor symptoms, being typical for Parkinson’s disease. This dissertation evaluates the results of the De-Novo-Parkinson-Kassel-study putting special focus on olfactory testing with Sniffin’ Sticks. The study consists of 117 patients and 100 healthy controls. The groups are being compared by different tests focused on non-motor symptoms, e.g. olfactory loss, depression, sleep disability, cognitive impairment and life quality. The tests were conducted at two different dates. When comparing the baseline testing with the follow-up testing 24 months later, the results of our statistical analysis show significant differences between the groups. Especially the results of olfactory testing show a clear deterioration of olfactory abilities during the course of the disorder. Our findings lead to the conclusion that hyposmia is a valid symptom for Parkinson’s disease. Using hyposmia as a part of a biomarker could thus help detecting patients with Parkinson’s disease at an earlier, premotor stage.
