Abstract
English
Due to an ongoing digitalization of societies and businesses and an increasingly intense and complex competitive environment, incumbent firms need to stay up to date with technological advancements and digitally transform their business. Since digital transformation is an indispensable but challenging endeavor for firms across industries, it has become a highly relevant topic for firm executives and researchers alike. Recent studies on digital transformation focus on developing and analyzing specific strategies to manage digital transformations or investigating the impact of digital transformation on existing business models. Overall, research on digital transformation is continuously growing, but still at an early stage. This cumulative dissertation aims to extend the existing research on digital transformation and contribute to the ongoing discussion on digital transformation from different angles. This is done by conducting five studies in two different but highly interrelated research areas with their specific viewpoint on digital transformation. The first research area deals with the process of digital transformation in the context of existing business models. The studies in this research area first provide an overview of the current state of research on digital transformation-driven business model innovation and investigate digital transformation-driven business model innovation from three different perspectives: a holistic perspective, a technology-specific perspective, and a function-specific perspective. The findings in this research area emphasize the high importance of the business model concept in digital transformation research. It is shown how digital transformation impacts all elements of a business model, how the use of artificial intelligence can help innovating existing business models, and how digital transformation strategies are developed at the business unit level. The second research area deals with the implications of digital transformation for corporate communication strategies. The paper in this research area analyzes the role of the chief digital officer concerning the external communication flow of firms’ digital transformation endeavors. It is shown that firms with a chief digital officer offer more information on their digital transformation activities in their corporate communication than firms without a chief digital officer. In summary, this dissertation addresses various relevant research gaps at the intersection of digital transformation, business models, and corporate communication.
