Hyderabad is a fast growing emerging Indian Megacity. Along with globalisation rapid and drastic changes have taken place resulting in spatial fragmentations and new conflicts. The Muslim-dominated old city of Hyderabad appears to be excluded by modern influences and disconnected from other parts of the city. In spite of the specific religious and cultural diversity of the former princely state, Hyderabad faces communalism related to Hindu-Muslim conflicts. The marginalised population of Hindi and Muslim communities of the old city is instrumentalised to fight each other for the benefits of political and economic actors. This dissertation examines different types of social production of space in three research locations of the old city of Hyderabad using Henri Lefebvre´s theoretical concept „The Production of Space“ (2011 [1974]) and the theories of motivations leading to communalism. It elaborates how the production of space is influenced by communalism as well as by globalisation and urbanisation. The main part of the empirical research has been conducted over twelve months in the period from 2011 until 2014. From 2015 until 2019 additional annual research visits have been taken place in Hyderabad including field research in the old city. As a result, the dissertation concludes that the dynamics of communalism have undergone changes along within the impact of globalisation. These changes characterise the production of space and present the constant occurring variations, which are nowadays influenced by recent political polarisation.de
