Abstract

English

Telephone usage continues to be a challenge for patients with cochlear implants despite advances in technology. This results in a reduced qualitfy of life. This study aims to test an auditory training program to improve the ability to hear while using the telephone with a cochlear implant. The home-based training, which patients can perform on their own, was designed to improve auditory rehabilitation and long-distance speech comprehension. This is a controlled, randomized, double-blind prospective study and includes 20 subjects with cochlear-implants. Following a standardized protocol, data was obtained before and after auditory training. A modified, filtered test (Oldenburger Satztes) was designed to simulate telephone usage and evaluate the improvement. In summary, this study demonstrated the effectiveness of a home-based auditory training with filtered speech material to improve sentence recognition in a telephone-like auditory task.
