In this study, we were primarily interested in which perioperative analgesic procedures were used for a major amputation of the lower extremity at the University Medical Centre Göttingen in the period from 2013 to 2016 and how effective they were in preventing phantom limb pain. In addition, an outlook on the possible therapy of phantom limb pain should be created. For this purpose, we conducted a retro- and prospective cross-sectional study. In the retrospective arm of the study, we were able to perform a quantitative evaluation of the amputations and the perioperative analgesic procedures. In the prospective arm, we were able to determine the outcome of perioperative pain therapy. A total of 164 subjects were included in the retrospective arm of the study and 27 in the prospective arm. To date, the treatment of phantom limb pain is unsatisfactory. As long as this is not optimised, there will continue to be patients suffering from phantom and/or residual limb pain after major amputations of the lower limb. The solution to prevent or reduce the pain that has arisen does not lie in a single form of therapy. A combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies is crucial.
