The book explores Hip Hop activism in social work, education, and political movements in New York and Dakar. Based on 40 interviews, and ethnographic fieldwork, the author identifies three types of Hip Hop activists: Organic intellectuals (movement organizers), cultural organizers (event planners), and organic pedagogues (teachers). The latter are practitioners (DJs, rappers, dancers, and style writers) who use Hip Hop practices to transform classrooms in solidarity with its Afro-diasporic roots. Their teaching methods, social-justice-based curricula, and mentoring relationships are analyzed to find out how formalized Hip Hop teaching takes place. The book also looks at learning in scenes and how Hip Hop’s communities of practice are structured e.g. via event formats. The author analyzes four types of Hip Hop non-profits, the field, and the possibilities and pitfalls of Hip Hop’s ‘Ngoization’. Finally, Senegal’s Y'en a Marre movement serves as a case study, to see whether Hip Hop can drive social change through movement organizing, and mobilizing.

Das Buch untersucht Hip Hop Aktivismus in der Sozialen Arbeit, in Bildungskontexten und in politischen Bewegungen in New York und in Dakar. Auf der Grundlage von 40 Interviews und ethnographischer Feldforschung identifiziert der Autor drei Typen von Hip-Hop-Aktivist*innen: Organische Intellektuelle (Bewegungsorganisator*innen), Kulturorganisator*innen (Veranstaltungsplanende) und organische Pädagog*innen (Lehrende). Letztere sind Praktizierende (DJs, Rapperinnen, Tänzer und Style Writerinnen), die Hip-Hop-Praktiken nutzen, um Klassenzimmer in Solidarität mit den kulturellen, afrodiasporischen Wurzeln zu transformieren. Ihre Lehrmethoden, an sozialer Gerechtigkeit orientierte Lehrpläne und Mentoring-Beziehungen werden analysiert, um herauszufinden, wie formalisierter Hip-Hop-Unterricht abläuft. Das Buch befasst sich auch mit dem Lernen in Szenen und mit der Frage, wie die Communities of Practice der Hip Hop Kultur z.B. durch Veranstaltungsformate strukturiert werden. Der Autor analysiert vier Typen von Hip Hop Non-Profit-Organisationen, das Feld und die Möglichkeiten sowie Fallstricke der "Ngoisierung" von Hip Hop. Schließlich dient die senegalesische Y'en a Marre-Bewegung als Fallstudie, um herauszufinden, ob Hip Hop durch Organizing und Mobilisierung über soziale Bewegungen zu gesellschaftlichem Wandel beitragen kann.
