Abstract
English
This thesis investigates the ideas of Confucian hermeneutics (jingxue 經學), tradition, and religion as proposed by the modern Chinese scholar Kang Youwei 康有為 (1858-1927) and his contemporary followers, known as New Kangists (xin Kang Youwei zhuyi zhe 新康有為主義者). It begins by establishing the conceptual connections between Confucian hermeneutics and the concepts of tradition and religion, then proceeds to outline Kang’s views on Confucian traditions and his theoretical positions on tradition and religion across different periods of his life. As the next step, this thesis moves into the fundamental ideas of the New Kangists, exploring their perspectives on the same themes that preoccupied Kang, their academic relationship with him, and the disputes that have arisen around these ideas in contemporary China.
