The goal of this dissertation was to retrospectively assess the prognostic utility of left atrial long axis strain (LA LAS) in cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in a study population of two multicentric studies of survivors of acute myocardial infarction. The utility of a similar parameter derived from feature tracking analysis had already been shown and LA LAS was conceived to simplify the process of left atrial deformation analysis. LA LAS was calculated using two different approaches and statistically compared to patients’ outcomes after 12 months. Its prognostic abilities were then statistically tested against several clinical and imaging based parameters, which had been assessed in earlier studies. Also, intra-/interobserver agreement analyses were performed. LA LAS showed significant correlation with feature tracking, promising prognostic results (independently of various other parameters and non-inferior to feature tracking) and excellent intra-/interobserver agreement. Both LA LAS approaches produced similar results. To conclude, LA LAS appears as a viable alternative to feature tracking for assessment of left atrial function and risk prognostication in survivors of acute myocardial infarction.de
