Abstract
English
In the treatment of critically ill patients, the administration of medications plays a crucial role. There are two main routes of administration: enteral (orally or via a nasogastric tube) and parenteral (directly into the bloodstream, e.g., intravenously). The choice of administration route depends both on the patient’s clinical condition and the type of medication. Previous studies suggest that critically ill patients often suffer from reduced intestinal motility and absorption dysfunction, which may affect the effectiveness of enteral drug administration. The goal of this study is to investigate the pharmacokinetic suitability of the enteral administration route using a proton pump inhibitor (Esomeprazole) and compare it with parenteral administration in critically ill patients. Furthermore, the drug absorption in these patients will be compared to that of patients undergoing selective cardiac surgery under general anesthesia.
