Abstract
English
This thesis explores different dimensions of inequality and discrimination in developing countries. In Chapter 2, we combine different aspects of attitudes toward immigration in a conceptual framework and test them empirically with novel survey data from Uganda and Senegal. Chapter 3 examines the effects of a large-scale doctor exodus that was caused by discriminatory politics in Brazil and dis-proportionally affected rural areas. Chapter 4 analyses the effectiveness of healthcare that is targeted at the homeless population, building on unique administrative data from Brazil. Overall, my results highlight the complexity of inequality and discrimination, and the importance of public services in reducing them to foster sustainable development.
