Abstract

English

The thesis deals with the question of the extent to which the people of classical Athens succeeded in ensuring a sustainable supply of resources for Athenian society. In the first part of the thesis, the author analyses which foodstuffs, but also which other resources such as wood, ceramics or metals were needed in everyday life of Classical Athens. The second part uses new institutional economics, and in particular transaction cost theory, to analyse institutions that were intended to ensure a sustainable supply of resources, as well as geo-economic strategies in Athenian League policy.

Die Arbeit befasst sich mit der Frage, in wieweit es den Menschen im klassischen Athen gelang, eine nachhaltige Ressourcenversorgung für die athenische Gesellschaft zu gewährleisten. Dabei wird in einem ersten Teil erarbeitet, welche Nahrungsmittel, aber auch welche anderen Ressourcen wie Holz, Keramik oder Metalle im alltäglichen Leben benötig wurden. In einem zweiten Teil werden mit Hilfe der Neuen Institutionenökonomik und insbesondere der Transaktionskostentheorie Institutionen beleuchtet, die eine nachhaltige Ressourcenversorgung gewährleisten sollten sowie geoökonomische Strategien in der athenischen Seebundpolitik.
