Platelet-rich plasma is used in various fields of medicine, especially to improve wound healing and reduce wound healing disorders. The present study investigated the influence of the application of a platelet-rich plasma in the wound area after median sternotomy on 300 patients. During the follow-up period of 30 days the postoperative clinical course was recorded (wound and sternum status, need for revision surgery, blood loss, laboratory markers of inflammation e.g.). For platelet-rich plasma in cardiothoracic surgery, no significant effects could be shown in this prospective study design. Furthermore, we developed a predictive model, based on the available postoperative data, to identify patients with need for reoperation caused by sternal wound infection.de
