Abstract

English

Worldwide, breast cancer is the most-common invasive cancer in women. Despite of advancing treatment options, women still die due to dissemination and metastasis formation. It is known that tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) promote tumor invasion and metastasis of breast cancer cells. In this dissertation the effect of Mifamurtid, a potent immunomodulator approved for the treatment of progressive osteosarcoma, on the macrophage-induced tumor invasion was analyzed. The results showed that Mifamurtid causes a significant reduction in macrophage-induces tumor invasion. However, a direct effect on tumor invasion was detected and it was shown that different breast cancer cell lines express the potential receptors for Mifarmutid in a varying degree. Therefore, it needs to be further elucidated, whether the here shown effect is due to an activation of the macrophages or result from a direct effect on the tumor cells.
