In 2009 a working group of the Institute of Occupational, Social and Environmental Medicine from the University Medical Center Göttingen realized a project for the initiation and evaluation of allergy prevention at schools. The project was conducted in cooperation with the IVDK (Information Network of Departments of Dermatology) and with support of the BMELV (Federal Ministry of Food and Agricultre). The project was based on the obvious gaps in the prevention of allergies, the enhanced animal allergen exposure in schools, and the low knowledge level of the teaching staff with regard to the topics “allergies” and “allergy and career choice”. Two central hypotheses are the foundation of the present questionnaire: (1) Secondary schools of the types “Hauptschule”, “Realschule” and “Berufsschule” significantly more frequently attach importance to allergies in the school everyday life than schools of the types “Gesamtschule” and “Gymnasium”. This hypothesis arises from the fact that particularly graduates from the school types “Hauptschule” and “Realschule” decide to learn a trade which increases the risk of being affected by occupational dermatoses. (2) The differing prevalence in the urban and rural areas influences the assessment of importance of allergies in the school’s everyday life. According to previous studies, children living in urban areas are more often affected by allergic diseases than children living in rural areas. Neither of the two hypotheses could be confirmed. (1) Schools of the types “Gesamtschule” and “Gymnasium” significantly more frequently attach importance to allergies in the school everyday life than schools of the types “Hauptschule”, “Realschule” and “Berufsschule”. To raise the awareness for the topic “allergy prevention and career choice”, it is recommended to draft teaching units for the students of the school types “Hauptschule” and “Realschule” in following research projects. A further study could investigate the effect of this action. (2) The comparison urban area vs. rural area did not show any significant differences with respect to the assessment of importance of allergies in the school’s everyday life. Even in Hannover, the largest city within this study, the differences were not significant. Further studies could investigate the comparison urban area vs. rural area in bigger cities such as Berlin, Munich or Frankfurt.
