This dissertation was written within the framework of the research project "Mit der Schule ins Museum. Eine empirische Untersuchung zum historischen Lernen von Schülerinnen und Schülern im Historischen Museum Hannover" at the Chair of History Education of Professor Michael Sauer at the Georg-August-University of Göttingen, which was funded by the Ministry of Science and Culture of Lower Saxony. The central question of the dissertation is the didactic design of museum educational programmes for school classes with special consideration of the question to what extent the museum potentials (original objects, other learning experiences and conditions than at school) are (can be) exploited in the programmes. Due to its location in the didactics of history and the extent to be mastered, the study is limited to programmes on the topic Middle Ages at historically oriented museums. The concept of design here means the result of the meeting of conception (meso-level) and implementation (micro-level) of museum educational programmes. In the course of the work on inductive procedures, analytically separate aspects and basic conditions of the didactic design were worked out. The empirical investigation is carried out within the framework of the Grounded Theory Methodology (GTM) on a total of three didactic levels using method triangulation: the macro level, where a qualitative content analysis is used to look at the literature on museum education; the meso level, where a programme analysis comprising the analysis of 319 texts on museum websites describing the programmes and a quantitative survey of 55 museum educators is conducted; and the micro level, where videographies and expert interviews are collected within the framework of a focused ethnography. The central result of the study is that the museum potentials in the examined programmes are not (or cannot be) fully exploited. On the one hand, this is due to the general conditions of educational work at museums, but on the other hand also to a strong orientation towards school expectations and a lack of consideration of the museum objects.de
