The use of cardiotomy suction for surgeries with cardiopulmonary bypass enables retransfusion of the patient's own blood and  ensures the surgeon's view. Cardiotomy suction can destroy blood components by various factors (shear stress, admixture of air, contact with foreign surfaces). In this thesis, the first version of a new type of cardiotomy suction (TCSS), using an integrated sensor in the shaft to detect turbulences, is evaluated.  25 surgeries with cardiopulmonary bypass were recorded to analyze turbulences during use of the TCSS compared to the standard cardiotomy suction showing that low-level turbulence, intermediate-level turbulence and high-level turbulence occur less frequently with the TCSS.  Free hemoglobin was measured for evaluation of hemolysis with a  significant increase in free hemoglobin postoperatively in both groups without a significant group difference. Blood smears showed smaller erythrocytes in the TCSS group. A differential blood count with signs of an inflammatory reaction was determined in both groups.  In summary, by using a first version of TCSS, it was possible to reduce turbulence caused by cardiotomy suction during surgeries with cardiopulmonary bypass. Further studies with larger patient populations are required to analyze the clinical effects in more detail. de
