The role of the synapse as a central element of neuron function has been discussed widely over the years. Likewise, differences between different neurons regarding their anatomy, function (motor, sensor, association), plasticity and phylogenetic age are already well researched. What is still up for debate is whether or not these differences are visible on the molecular level within the synapses of neurons. This dissertation analyzes the amount and localisations of ten synaptic proteins and compares them between five different brain areas of the rat brain. It is based on data from quantitative analysis of STED images. The results show that the differences in protein amount and localisation in the synapse are only slight for the analyzed proteins and brain area, however they give some new base case for further investigation on the topic.
