dc.description.abstractger	Berechnung und Oberflächlichkeit versus Einfühlsamkeit und Subjektivität – dieses Oppositionsverhältnis hat sich in der Literaturwissenschaft des vergangenen Jahrhunderts jahrzehntelang tradiert, um das Verhältnis zwischen Galanterie und Empfindsamkeit zu beschreiben. Die jüngere Forschung geht jedoch nicht mehr von dieser Abgrenzung aus, sondern spürt vielmehr beständig Kontinuitäten zwischen galanten und empfindsamen Texten auf. An diese Positionen knüpft die vorliegende Arbeit an. Ziel ist es, durch eine genaue Textanalyse aufzuzeigen, dass es neben den stets betonten epochenspezifischen Unterschieden auch frappierende Gemeinsamkeiten zwischen galanten und empfindsamen Romanen gibt. Den Ausgangspunkt nimmt die Studie in der These, dass sich eine Vergleichbarkeit durch eine Bezugnahme auf zeitgenössische moralphilosophische Annahmen um 1700 herausstellen lässt. Als Referenztext dient die zweiteilige Sittenlehre des Frühaufklärers Christian Thomasius. Grundlegend hierfür ist die Beobachtung, dass sowohl die Sittenlehre als auch die untersuchten galanten und empfindsamen Romane durch eine Abenteuerstruktur von Liebe – Trennung – und Vereinigung geprägt sind. Fundament für die erzähltheoretische Analyse ist ein strukturalistisch hergeleitetes Bewährungsschema, das eine textnahe Untersuchung der Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede gewährleistet. Dabei werden auch zeitgenössische romanpoetologische Schriften berücksichtigt, die den Anspruch des prodesse et delectare der Romantexte betonen. Anspruch ist hierbei nicht, den Gesamtzusammenhang zwischen Galanterie und Empfindsamkeit zu erfassen, sondern die bestehende Forschung durch einen Beitrag zu ergänzen, der Kontinuitäten an kanonischen Romantexten differenziert nachweist.	de
dc.description.abstracteng	Calculation and superficiality versus sensitivity and subjectivity – over the course of the 20th century, the field of literature has constructed this opposition to delineate the relationship between literary gallantry and sentimentalism. Recent studies have abandoned this clear-cut distinction and have instead traced the continuities between gallant and sentimental texts. This PhD thesis follows this newer approach with the objective of utilizing a differentiated textual analysis to highlight a number of noticeable common features of gallant and sentimental novels rather than differences established through their periodization that scholarship has tended to emphasize. The study begins with the argument that the two types of novels can be compared on the basis of their shared referencing of contemporaneous theories in moral philosophy around the year 1700 CE, which is assessed through Christian Thomasius’ two-volume, early Enlightenment ethics (Sittenlehre). This claim is based on the observation that both ethics as well as the examined gallant and sentimental novels are characterized through a three-part adventure structure of love – separation – and reunion. The study’s narratological analysis is based on a common structural feature of the texts, namely their pattern of a moral trial for the protagonist, which allows for a discussion of the similarities and differences using close textual readings. The analysis will also take into account contemporaneous works on the poetics of the novel, which highlight the prodesse et delectare requirement of the assessed texts. While this thesis does not attempt to theorize the comprehensive relationship between literary gallantry and sentimentalism, it aims to complement current academic debates through contributing a differentiated discussion of the continuities inherent to canonical novels.	de
