Introduction. Occlusion, i.e. the sum of contacts between teeth of the maxilla and mandible, plays a decisive role in the pathogenesis of temporomandibular disorders (tmd) and in restorative therapy. Static and dynamic occlusion, the topography and intensity of the contact points, are considered constant variables in dental restorations, and thus alleged errors in their fabrication are attributed to insufficient registration and false transition to laboratory conditions. The present study therefore aimed to use a new digital approach of occlusion analysis to evaluate the validity of analog/conventional occlusal recording procedures. In addition, it should be examined whether the dynamic and static occlusion is constant or subject to circadian fluctuations. Material and methods. During the clinical examination, 19 patients aged 30.8 ± 4.8 years were examined three times per day, with the procedure being repeated after 14 days. The occlusion was recorded digitally at each point of time using the T-Scan III system, silicone and wax registrations, as well as contact and occlusal foil registrations. Results and conclusion. The study showed that the occlusion cannot be considered constant and that topography and intensity of the contact points vary significantly. It also showed that common analog methods differed among themselves and in comparison to the digital method, in terms of contact point topography and intensity. A circadian occlusion variance can be assumed, but future investigations with highly sensitive, non-irritating and non-invasive measuring instruments are necessary to provide a scientifically reliable confirmation of this observation.de
