This study focuses on the manifestations of popular seriality in the daily political newspaper Kölnische Zeitung in the light of the paper’s specific medial organizing principles. Arranged according to the decades from 1850 to 1890, not only the serial characteristics of exemplary fictional texts positioned in the newspaper’s feuilleton (i.e. feuilleton novels and shorter pieces of fiction) are analyzed but also the seriality of simultaneously published factual contributions above the “Feuilletonstrich” as well as their occasional textual interactions beyond that typographic boundary. Determined by the properties of the examined material, the newspaper’s inherent prioritizations concerning seriality are also taken into account, complemented by contingent contrasts between initial examples of feuilleton fiction and their subsequent release in book form.

Die vorliegende Arbeit widmet sich den Ausprägungen populärer Serialität im tagesaktuellen politischen Periodikum Kölnische Zeitung im Zusammenhang mit den spezifischen medialen Organisationsprinzipien des Presseorgans. Gestaffelt nach Dekaden im historischen Verlauf von 1850 bis 1890 werden dabei nicht nur die seriellen Charakteristika exemplarischer fiktionaler Feuilletontexte (d.h. von Feuilletonromanen und kürzeren belletristischen Texten) analysiert, sondern auch die Serialitätsausprägungen von parallel publizierten faktualen Zeitungsbeiträgen sowie über den Feuilletonstrich hinausgehende Beispiele für die punktuellen Interaktionen derartiger fiktionaler und faktualer Texte. Determiniert von der Beschaffenheit des analysierten Materials fungieren hierbei dementsprechend auch zeitungsinterne serialitätsbezogene Schwerpunktsetzungen als Analysebestandteile, ergänzt um vereinzelte herausgearbeitete Kontraste zwischen ursprünglichen Feuilletontextversionen und nachträglich veröffentlichten gebundenen Varianten in Buchform.
