Abstract
English
In muscle biopsies of patients with inclusion body myositis signs of degeneration, inflammation and mitochondrial damage can be detected. Pathogenesis of this neuromuscular disorder, predominantly affecting elderly male patients, remains elusive. This research project focuses on the influence of cytokine mediated inflammatory cells stress on mitochondrial dynamics and function in human muscle cells. Data suggests a shift of mitochondrial dynamics towards fission processes, resulting in decreased respiratory chain activity and therefore reduction of ATP production.
