Rs are receptor tyrosine kinases that both bind collagens and are activated by fibrillar collagens. Using a knockout model, this thesis showed that the lack of DDR1 does not have an effect on the light microscopic structure and the ultrastructure of murine dental and periodontal tissues. Ultrastructurally, the PDL, a highly specialized tissue whose ECM is dominated by fibrillar collagens, did not show any abnormality either. This thesis is the first study to systematically perform the immunohistochemical detection of matrilin-1, -2, -3 and -4 in segments of jaws and molars of the wildtype mouse. Matrilins represent filament-forming and collagen-binding proteins of the ECM that can be detected particularly in cartilage and embryonic tissues. In this thesis, they were localized uniformly in the dental pulp, in the ECM of the PDL and in vascular walls in PDL and bone, respectively. Differences in the detectability of matrilin-1, -2, -3 and -4 in the wildtype mouse existed in coronal dentine and in lacunae of osteocytes. Thus, matrilins have a structural relevance in the ECM of murine dental and periodontal tissues. Matrilin-1, -2, -3 and -4 were also detected in dental and periodontal tissues of the DDR1 knockout mouse. By comparing the immunohistochemical results, this thesis showed that the DDR1 knockout does not have an effect on the biochemical composition of murine dental and periodontal tissues in terms of the immunohistochemical detectability of matrilins.de
