Aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of benign lymphadenopathy in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis. To our knowledge there is no other study evaluating all Robbins levels in patients with AIT considering every visible lymphatic node without arbitrary cut-offs. We examined 64 patients, 32 as a control group and 32 patients who had been diagnosed with autoimmune thyroiditis. We used ultrasound to evaluate the neck, considering all Robbins-levels and counted all visuable lymph nodes. The size and morphology of the lymphatic node was taken into account as well. Robbins levels were divided into clusters to summarize select levels. We found 83 lymph nodes in Robbins level VI in AIT patients. The control group on the other hand showed two lymph nodes in this area. The characteristics of these 83 lymph nodes included an s/l-ratio > 0.5 in 59.04%, 96.4% showed no sign of vascularity and 4.83% showed a central or hilar vascularity. The average long axis of these lymph nodes was 4.65 mm. There was another significant difference in the number of lymph nodes in Robbins level V. We found 368 lymph nodes in AIT patients in Robbins level V versus 596 nodes in the control group with an s/l-ratio > 0.5 (152 in the control group versus 64 lymph nodes in the AIT-group) without further explanation yet. We conclude that a lymphadenopathy in Robbins level VI is a common sign in patients with AIT.de
