The outcome of metastatic colorectal cancer patients is up to now unsatisfactory and there is a need for effective therapeutic options. Fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) and FGF ligand alterations have been investigated in various solid tumors, the doctoral thesis at hand focusses on FGFR and FGF alterations in colorectal cancer. Primary tumors and liver metastases of colorectal cancer patients have been analyzed for FGFR alterations. In primary tumors as well as in metastases alterations on DNA and RNA level could be detected. The data suggest that in metastases certain FGFR alterations have also a prognostic relevance, thus providing a potential rationale for including these patients into clinical trials with anti-FGFR treatment.de
