| de |

dc.description.abstracteng | The aim of this study was to examine the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of the primary sensory cortex on thermal and mechanical perception, assessed by quantitative sensory testing (QST). The QST protocol encompasses tests for nearly all aspects of somatosensation. It was applied to twelve healthy subjects before and after each tDCS stimulation type. Cathodal, anodal and sham tDCS was applied at a 1 mA current intensity. The active electrode was located over the left primary sensory cortex and the reference electrode above the right orbit. Each stimulation was conducted for 15 minutes. After cathodal stimulation a significantly increased cold detection threshold was observed in the contralateral and ipsilateral hand as compared to baseline condition and sham stimulation. Furthermore the warm detection threshold was significantly increased in the contralateral hand after cathodal stimulation when compared with the baseline condition but not with sham stimulation. Thermal pain as well as mechanical detection and pain thresholds were not significantly affected by tDCS. In conclusion, the results of this study put forward that cathodal tDCS applied over the primary sensory cortex is able to decrease an Aδ-fiber-mediated somatosensory modality, namely the sensitivity to nonpainful cold. In addition, cathodal tDCS reduced sensitivity to warm detection only in comparison with the baseline condition but not with sham stimulation. Sham and anodal stimulation showed no significant effects. | de |
