dc.description.abstracteng20-Hydroxyecdysone (Ecd) has numerous favorable effects on a variety of organs and tissues. It has protective effects on hormone-deficiency associated sarcopenia und osteoporosis. It is devoid of estrogenic and androgenic effects. Aging in men is also associated with loss of cardiomyocytes, hypertrophy of the remaining cells and accumulation of extracellular matrix. These changes affect the function of the myocardium. The application of 20-hydroxyecdysone might be a new approach to improve symptoms like sarcopenia and osteoporosis in elderly sex hormone deficient men. To investigate the effects, or even protective effects, of 20-hydroxyecdysone on the sex-hormone-deficiency associated changes in the myocardium, gonadectomized male rats were orally treated with Ecd (11, 22, 67 mg/animal/day) over three month. The heart samples were evaluated histologically to quantify the number of cardiac myocytes, the area of the cells, the percentage of myocardial-collagen and the percentage of collagen-elastin in the wall of the coronary artery. Compared to non-treated rats there were no changes in the heart weights, the number of cardiac myocytes and the percentage of the myocardial-collagen. There were surprising results in the analysis of the area of the cardiac myocytes: under the lowest dose (Ecd 11) the area was significant bigger and under the middle (Ecd 22) and highest dose (Ecd 67) the areas were significant smaller compared to non-treated rats. The percentage of the collagen-elastin in the coronary-artery wall was significant higher under the middle dose (Ecd 22). In conclusion Ecd has dose depending effects on the cardiomyocytes area. It is not clear how these histomorphological changes affect the function of the myocardium. Further tests are necessary to investigate the impact on the function of the heart.de
