Individuen. | de |
dc.description.abstracteng | This thesis describes the examination of 143 archaeological slecetal findings from early
medieval age and early modern ageto find traces of scurvey.
Vitamin C deficiency leads to poor collagen synthesis. Therefore bleedings caused by fragile
bloodvessel walls form the main symptom of scurvey. Bleedings may also occure under the
periost and the pericranium and in the periodontium. The resulting haematoma lift the periost
from the bone surface acting as a growth-stimulus and thus provoke hypervaskularisation of
the bone surface and the formation of porous layers of new bone, which are preserved on
archaeological sceletons.
Light-optical microscope examinations were performed to discriminate the diagnosis of
scurvey against other diseases, such as rickets anemia, and leprosy, and also against
postmortem modifications.
Furthermore all pathological findings were tested to fit a certain distribution pattern.
The results of these tests yielded the diagnosis of scurvey for total number of 27 cases,
consisting of 23 infantile and 4 adult individuals. | de |
