Alzheimer´s Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder, whose causes still have to be elucidated. The courses of the disease are heterogen, and rapid progresses were discribed. The data about risk factors and predictors of rapid progressive AD is still unclear. Cellular Prion Protein (PrPc) is a cell surface protein, especially of the neural tissue. Interactions of PrPc with the neuropathological hallmarks of AD, like Aß and its precursor proteins, as well as Tau, pTau and their metabolic pathways has been discribed recently. In a longitudal, prospective study we researched if PrPc in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of subjects with probable AD as well as other csf-biomarkers are suitable as predictors of rapid progressive cognitive decline in AD. We could show among others, that CSF-PrPc highly correlates negativly with cognitive decline in female subjects with APOE ε3/3 genotype and suggest, that PrPc in CSF could be a predictor of rpAD in specific cases.de
