Abstract
English
Local ion-transport processes in active materials of lithium-ion batteries like lithium manganese oxide are essential influenced by the microstructure but is not yet well characterised. Atom probe tomography, a method combining sub-nanometer spatial resolution with sub-parts-per-thousand chemical resolution, is routinely used for the characterisation of microstructures and has the advantage of element independent detection efficiencies of lithium and manganese. For the characterisation of lithium manganese oxide an in house constructed laser-assisted atom probe was installed and is described in this thesis. Herein, results of structural and chemical defects such as foreign phases, twins and local variation of the lithium content are presented and their influences on the local transport properties are discussed. Due to the high mobility of lithium ions in lithium manganese oxide the influence of the measurement itself on the spatial distribution was verified by a parameter study. In defect free regions lattice planes of lithium manganese oxide are reconstructed for the first time, demonstrating the high spatial resolution of the method. Thus, the results demonstrate the necessity of local analysis for under-standing local processes and atom probe tomography provides a key access to the 3D microstructural characterisation.
