| de |
dc.description.abstracteng | Prior to embarking on his literary career Günter Grass had studied visual arts from 1948 to 1955. Modelling and drawing would accompany his writings thereafter, with drawings and sculptures, metaphors and allegories mingling in motifs that permeate his entire oeuvre. Not only are they part of a creative process, they are also a mainstay that underpins an overarching aesthetic, interlinked through references between the texts and his own artworks as well as those of others, not to mention the graphic artwork included in the books. The study focuses on the expression of the imagery employed by the visual artist and writer during his studies. It explores the significance of works of classical modernism within this process and concludes that Cubism and Surrealism were crucial contributing factors in Grass’s dissecting analyses of his subject matter and his confrontations with essentially dissimilar objects on the page. By way of example the study examines the migrations of six motifs within the ambit of the "Danzig Trilogy" as well as the "Diary of a Snail" and "The Flounder" through various literary genres and forms of artistic expression. It looks at the interactions between writing and drawing as well as the effects of their interlinking in Grass’s publications. Writing in, and with, images rich in contradiction adds yet another plane, one that is borne by visual associations and illustrates paradoxical correlations, without offering explanatory accounts. | de |
